As a city, Rouen was more beautiful than I ever could have imagined. The workshop delegates were placed in various small hotels in the center, as Rouen did not have a conference hotel large enough for hundreds of people to stay in one place. Mine was in a cobblestoned, pedestrian street next to the Cathedral (the hotel in fact had the same name) and walking the different routes to the various conference venues over a three day period was a delight. The historical center of this city is a gem of medieval architecture, and is filled with squares containing caf\u00e9s, shops and restaurants. It is a perfect destination to study French as it has a university, allowing language students that age to make friends with the local students, and as a city, it large enough to give visitors enough to do, but not so large as to make long distances unmanageable. The much-awarded school French in Normandy is located about 20 minutes by bus from the center, rendering it reachable in a short amount of time, but closer to host families, so that students are not required to travel 45 minutes to an hour to reach them as can be the case in much larger cities.
