CES Dublin is in the perfect location, right in the heart of the historic city of Dublin. All the main tourist attractions such as Trinity College, Dublin Castle and Dublin’s cultural quarter, Temple Bar, are just a few minutes’ walk away. It is around the corner from Dublin’s best shopping area, Grafton Street, and the beautiful and relaxing city park, Stephen’s Green.
“Friendly and fun” are the words most visitors use to describe Dublin, and as a result it has fast become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Boasting everything from ancient ruins, to fashionable shops and restaurants, to a famously vibrant nightlife, Dublin caters to everyone.
Music, culture and art are everywhere in Dublin. Throughout the year there are hundreds of festivals and concerts, so whether students are interested in dance music or traditional music, there is something for each one. Areas such as Temple Bar and Vicar Street comprise Dublin’s “Latin Quarter,” and are always lively with a huge selection of restaurants, food and music from all over the world. There is plenty of Irish culture to be discovered around the city with Irish dancing shows, trad sessions (informal traditional music in pubs), buskers in the streets and Gaelic games.
Dublin’s many galleries and museums are all within easy walking distance of each other. Dublin Castle, Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square and the surrounding areas, feature some of the best Georgian architecture in all of Europe. Dublin City’s exquisite parks serve as wonderful places for a romantic stroll, or just to escape from the city for a while. Access to all sports is easy and affordable; golf, tennis and horseriding are all within a bus or train ride. Some of the best golf courses and horse racing tracks in the world can be found in Dublin. The mountains and sea are all close at hand and can be easily reached by Dublin’s modern public transport system.

“I got to know CES Dublin, the first of the CES schools, on a trip to Dublin in 2006, and since then, it has been a genuine pleasure to work with Justin and Jonathan Quinn in sending students to that school and to the others in the CES group. I see Justin almost every year, through either a visit to my office or at a workshop, and I always enjoy his friendliness, good humor, energy, and absolute availability in accommodating bookings. When I have a question for him, despite the hundreds of agents that he manages around the world on a super-busy schedule, his responses to me arrive immediately. I send my students to this school without hesitation because I know that the same warmth and service of the Quinn family will be extended to them. Of the many good English language schools in Dublin, this is almost always the very first one I recommend to my clients.”

The courses
GENERAL ENGLISH AND EXAMINATION COURSES
- Minimum age – 16 years
- Course duration: 2-50 weeks
- Number of lessons per week: 20 or 26
- Length of each lesson: 55 minutes
- Start dates: Most Mondays
- Number of students: maximum 14, average 12
- Average age of students on General English Courses: 22
Standard Course
The Standard General English Course takes place every morning from Monday to Friday, leaving students free to join the Social Program or study on the CES Online e-learning platform and in the Self-Access facilities every afternoon. The morning lessons are divided into two parts and students will usually be taught by two different teachers. Lessons concentrate on building students’ knowledge of the language, focusing primarily on helping increase vocabulary and improving grammar so that they attain the levels of accuracy they require. Lessons also work on improving students’ overall communicative proficiency and fluency, focusing on the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition to this, they will work on specific pronunciation difficulties and expand the range of language they use in real-life situations.
The course book is the basis for much of the curriculum, with supplementary material taken from workbooks, other resources and authentic and digital material. Every week the teachers make a class plan based on the student’s needs, the course book and our Curriculum Framework, which is matched to the CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages) Can-do Statements. Learning objectives for the week are set and shared with students on Monday morning. These objectives are reviewed again at the end of each week. Students will also have regular revision and testing to help them review their learning and measure progress. In addition, they will have regular online tutorials with their main teacher, where they can discuss progress and needs in more detail.
Number of lessons per week: 20
Timetable: 9:00-13:00 Monday to Friday
Intensive Course
On the Intensive General English Course, students will follow the same program as the Standard Course in the mornings. They will also have afternoon classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, in which they will have the opportunity to improve their communicative proficiency through discussions, topical debates, authentic materials and video. The school’s modern teaching methods and use of supplementary materials give students the best opportunity to build their language skills and maximize the benefits of the time they spend at the school.
Number of lessons per week: 26
Timetable: 9:00-13:00 Monday to Friday and 14.00 – 16.00 Tuesday to Thursday
Combination Course
On the Combination Course, students will follow the Standard Course in the mornings and have two afternoons of individual lessons. These are designed to meet the student’s individual requirements and give them the perfect opportunity to work on any specific language difficulties with their own teacher. In advance of the course or during their first individual lesson, the student will complete a Needs Analysis form with their teacher, in which they will be able to identify particular areas to work on. This helps the teacher to plan their lessons according to their specific needs, and ensures they get the maximum benefit from their lessons.
Number of lessons per week: 20 lessons of 55 minutes + 5 hours added to Standard Course
Timetable: 9.00 – 13.00 Monday to Friday (group lessons) and 14.00 – 16.30 two afternoons per week (one-to-one lessons)
IELTS Preparation Courses
Students who plan to go to university in either Ireland or the UK may need to take the IELTS Exam. CES will help them to achieve the grade they need to take them to further education. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is the most widely recognized university entry requirement in Europe. It tests the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is a secure, valid and reliable test of real-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation purposes. Most universities require a score of between 5.5 and 7.5. As the only official IELTS test center in the city, CES Dublin is able to offer the IELTS courses with the IELTS exam on site. At CES Dublin, students have a choice of following the Standard General English course in the mornings and taking IELTS preparation lessons three afternoons per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) or of concentrating on the IELTS Course for a full twenty hours per week during the mornings (Mondays to Fridays). If a student starts the course at a low level, their progress will be carefully monitored and they will be encouraged at every stage of their studies. They will then join the IELTS Preparation Course when it is most appropriate for them. The ideal level for joining this course is Intermediate (B1).
The course will focus on improving students’ level of English, as well as on developing exam techniques. At the end of each week, they will be given a progress test. They will take a complete IELTS examination in the last week of the course. If a student plans to take the exam while they are studying at CES, the school’s IELTS administrator or the Director of Studies will help them with registration.
Number of lessons per week: 20 or 26
Timetable: 9:00 – 13:00 Monday to Friday (20 lessons) and 14.00 – 16.00 Tuesday to Thursday (26 lessons)

It is a great addition to any Curriculum Vitae! CES’ Cambridge Examination Courses are designed to prepare students for one of the following Cambridge Examinations: First Certificate in English (FCE) or Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). The Cambridge Examinations usually take place four times per year, mid-March, mid-June, mid-August and mid-December. The courses are planned to finish on the week before the exam will take place. Students are advised to arrive one week before the course start date to allow time for assessment. The school cannot accept a student for any examination course until CES has confirmed the student is at the appropriate level for their chosen examination. Please note there must be a minimum of 8 students for each level of the Cambridge Exam.
CES Dublin also offers a 4-week preparation course for the FCE during the month of July. It will be held every morning during the first two weeks and in the morning and afternoon during the last two weeks. Students will have the opportunity to sit for the exam at the end of the course.

HOST FAMILY
One of the best ways to learn more about the people of Ireland is to choose homestay accommodation. All homestays are carefully selected and visited regularly to ensure consistently high standards. In nearly 40 years of operation, the school has amassed a huge selection of host families in Dublin, and homestays are in fact the accommodation of choice for the majority of CES students. The school and Marshall Language Services recommend this form of accommodation the most for language learning. Family life is informal and the people are welcoming, friendly and talkative, so students will have plenty of opportunities to practice their English with native speakers. By booking homestay accommodation, students will also not have to worry about shopping for food and preparing meals every day. Mealtimes are often the occasions in which families converse most with the students.
Additional homestay provisions and information:
- Meals: Breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday, all meals on Saturday and Sundays
- Linens: Homestay families provide all bed linens and towels. The school advises students to bring one extra towel.
- Distance from school: All homestays are located in the Dublin suburbs with an average travel time to the city center of 30-40 minutes by bus or train. The city also has bicycle lanes and if students prefer this mode of transport, the school can help with bicycle rental.
- Outside of June to September (the high season), students are placed in single rooms. During the high season, students are placed in twin rooms with students of a different native language, or single rooms during this period are available by paying a supplement.
- Accommodation is from Saturday to Saturday, Sunday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday. Is it possible to book extra nights at an additional cost.
- Private bathrooms in host families cannot be guaranteed.
- Adults aged 18+ do not have curfews.

The residence is available to adult students only (aged 18+). Twin rooms will be shared with another student of a different nationality, not necessarily from CES. For the centrality of the location, the fact that it is the only adult residence in Dublin to offer half-board, the fact that each room has a private bathroom, a room can be shared with a native English speaker, and the reasonable price, this is Marshall Language Services’ top recommendation for a student residence in Dublin. There are many more twin rooms than single rooms in the residence, so it is important to book the single rooms early.
