The picturesque town of Zell am See is located on the shore of one of the most beautiful lakes in Salzburg Land, Lake Zell. Zell am See is also located in the heart of the Pinzgau region of Salzburg. The area of Zell am See has been continuously populated since the Roman times. The town was founded by monks in the 8th century and was originally called Cella, with reference to a monk’s cell in a monastery. Zell am See is a popular winter and summer destination due to its location at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe, a famous Alpine viewpoint with a summit at 1965 meters above sea level.

Top of Salzburg Viewing Platform
Visit the “Top of Salzburg” panorama platform at the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn, 3029 meters above sea level. You will be able to view the glaciated sides of the 3000m-high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the rugged tips of the Steinerne Meer, the grass-covered slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps, the glacier of the Kitzsteinhorn and the Zell Basin with deep-blue lakes stretching below the platform. The 360m- long National Park Gallery tunnel containing information about the Park’s formation, flora and fauna, is the access to the platform.

The Lake Zell is perfect for ice sports in the winter, and a range of water sports in the summer such as sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.
Ride the Maisiflitzer
The Maisiflitzer toboggan ride, open all year round, is for those who love to have adrenaline rushing through their veins. Visitors can race downhill picturesque slopes in green two-seaters up to 40km/hour.
Hike, climb or bike
Zell am See and Kaprun have approximately 400 km of hiking trails at all altitudes. Visit the hiking attraction Seisenbergklamm and walk on wooden walkways through huge caverns and deep gorges. For those who enjoy biking, you can race along low traffic side roads or climb the beautiful pass road through wild forests, on stunning high plateaus, and take the free ride lines at the Kitzsteinhorn for downhill runs.

By Train
