Wonderfully diverse, Leeds combines quirky boutiques with high-end luxury and the big name high street brands, so there really is something for everyone. With shops housed in beautiful arcades and listed buildings, and a center that can be covered on foot in a few hours, Leeds offers a shopping experience like no other UK city.
Trinity Leeds
Housed under a giant iconic glass roof, Trinity Leeds is located in the heart of the city between Briggate and Albion Street. Covering 3 floors and open 7 days a week, Trinity is home to over 120 shops, bars and restaurants. Shoppers can visit the stores until 8pm from Monday to Saturday and then go on to enjoy dinner and a drink at over 20 superb bars and restaurants late into the night.
Kirkgate Market
Leeds Kirkgate Market, dating from 1875, is one of the largest covered markets in Europe and is open 6 days a week. There are over 400 stalls inside and a further 200 outside. Traders offer freshness, variety, and value for money with a friendly service in a vibrant atmosphere. Kirkgate Market is also where Marks & Spencer was born – Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar there in 1884. On the first and third Sunday of every month, Briggate plays host to the Farmers and Craft Market; fresh, organic produce and all your craft supplies.
Victoria Leeds
Victoria Leeds is home to both Victoria Quarter and Leeds’ newest retail destination Victoria Gate. The beautiful architecture of the Victoria Quarter’s arcades make a spectacular setting for a shopping spree. It’s also home to Europe’s largest stained glass window and more than 75 designer brands. Leeds’ Harvey Nichols, the first outside London, also calls the Victoria Quarter home. The newest addition to Leeds’ retail scene is Victoria Gate. Home to the largest John Lewis department store outside London and a range of luxury and designer brands, the opening of the new premium shopping destination means Leeds jumps up to the third largest shopping destination in the UK outside London.
The Corn Exchange
The beautiful building is home to a wide range of choice independent retailers and tasty eateries and also regularly hosts vintage and craft markets and record and food fairs.
The Arcades
The Grand Arcade is one of the oldest shopping Arcades in Leeds City Centre, and it is well worth a visit as it is full of Independent Retailers. It’s a true haven for anyone who wants to shop somewhere different, and find something not available on the traditional High Street.
With an array of cool independent shops Queens Arcade is the perfect place to browse. Shoppers will find a wide range of great jewelry shops and clothing boutiques inside, amongst other interesting shops. Thorntons Arcade, first opened in 1878, is a treasure trove of gifts and tasty treats, and has a famous clock. Central Arcade is the most modern of the four.
How to Arrive at your Language Course
By Rail
Frequent direct trains carry visitors from London to Leeds in just over two hours, with all other UK cities also easily reached by train. Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford all enjoy regular services from London with Virgin Trains East Coast, as well as connecting to Edinburgh. The First TransPennine Express service provides excellent links from Liverpool, Manchester and York. Cross Country run frequent services to Leeds from many of Britain’s major cities including Newcastle and Birmingham. All information on travelling by train, to and from Leeds is available here.
By Air
Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is situated at the heart of the Leeds City Region, approximately 13 km from Leeds city center. Visitors can now fly direct to LBA on a scheduled flight from over 75 destinations including Geneva, Paris, London, Berlin and Rome, including on some low-cost airlines. British Airways now fly from London Heathrow to Leeds three times daily.
