Things to Do and See During a Vacation Study
Manchester Museum of Science and Industry
Manchester’s rich industrial legacy is explored in this enormous museum set within the former Liverpool Street Station, the oldest rail terminus in the world. The large collection of steam engines, locomotives and original factory machinery tell the story of the city, while a host of new technology (flight simulator, 4D cinema) look to the future.
The Lowry
This is a magnificent location alongside Salford Quays, with three stunning theatres alongside galleries showcasing artists of local, national and international renown. With a huge variety of performances, the Lowry’s Lyric and Quays Theatres offer West End musicals, the very best in drama, live bands, famous comedians, world-class dance, opera, and more.
Manchester Cathedral
The Manchester Cathedral sports a gorgeous interior with the best late medieval woodwork in the north, especially in the quire and the ceiling. The modern glass is also of note.
Manchester Art Gallery
A superb collection of British art and European masters are on display at the city’s top gallery. The older wing has an impressive selection that includes 37 Turner watercolors, as well as the country’s best assemblage of Pre-Raphaelite art. The newer gallery is home to 20th-century British art featuring Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Stanley Spencer, Henry Moore and David Hockney.
Whitworth Art Gallery
Manchester’s second most important art gallery has a wonderful collection of British watercolors, historic textiles and galleries featuring artists from Dürer and Rembrandt to Lucien Freud and David Hockney.
Manchester Town Hall
Manchester’s most impressive building is the Grade I–listed town hall, completed in 1877 after a design by Alfred Waterhouse. Visitors can go into the building, climb the 85m-high tower and eat in the beautiful Sculpture Hall cafe.

Besides hosting six departments of the national broadcaster, this multibillion-pound complex is also home to the set of the soap opera Coronation Street, which broadcasts on ITv.
Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour at Old Trafford
In this 75-minute tour, visitors will explore historical exhibits and state-of-the-art interactive experiences in the museum before continuing to the club’s dressing rooms, the players’ tunnel to the pitch, and the manager’s dugout.
John Rylands Library
This stunning building is a breathtaking example of Victorian Gothic, especially the Reading Room, complete with high-vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows. The collection of early printed books and rare manuscripts is equally impressive, and includes a Gutenberg Bible.
