It is also the focal point for the country’s transportation, scientific and technological development, education and communication. “I had the tremendous pleasure of visiting both Shanghai and Beijing on the occasion of the annual IALC workshop in China in 2011, and have been eager to go back to this fascinating country ever since. For foreigners, especially first-timers, who want to study Chinese, Beijing is a good choice of location for the fact that the Mandarin language (also known as Putonghua, the official spoken language in China) is heavily based on the dialects of northeastern China and, in particular, the dialect of the capital. On the other hand, in some cities of the south, the locals speak a dialect among themselves that is completely different from standard Chinese Mandarin. When choosing which summer camp in Beijing to offer my children and teenage clients, after looking at many, I settled on this one for the fact that it is much larger than the others and has been running for many more years. I consider a long organizational experience important in any type of program, but especially one in which children and teens may travel so far from home to a country and culture that may be very different than their own. In the case of summer camps, it is also important to have a good number of participants, which will allow the management to be able more effectively to divide the participants into language levels and age groups. Finally, I appreciate the fact that the residential accommodation for this camp is in good quality hotel accommodation near the school. Students of an intermediate level also have the choice of staying with Chinese host families for a true full-immersion experience, with the school transporting them to and from class every day to avoid any issue of safety or the students becoming lost.”
