English in York: Peasholme House, St Saviour’s Place, York YO1 7PJ, United Kingdom
“For years I had heard about the beauty of York as destination in England, and when I had the opportunity to visit on the occasion of the IALC workshop in York and Leeds, I was able to verify that fact for myself. It is an absolute gem of a city, amongst the most picturesque I’ve ever seen in the UK or anywhere else. In all my dealings as a tourist, from my hotel staff to the person on the street directing me to the best place to eat roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, I found the locals to be very friendly as well. The school English in York is owned by the Claret Group, who are also owners of one of my favorite schools in the world, the wonderful European School of English (ESE) in Malta. For this reason, the decision to work with them in York required no persuasion on their part. The school itself is in a beautiful central neighborhood, in a historic Georgian building, shown to me by the head of the group itself, Sean LeGault, a stickler for class and quality in everything that I’ve observed about him. If my experience of working with ESE since 2003 proves anything, it is that students at this school will be extremely well taken care of. The rest of the staff that I met, including the director and one very memorable teacher, were a delight. Since then, I have been very enthusiastic about sending students here, also for the fact that for a city of its size and importance, York has very few English language schools, and as a result can offer international students the best quality host families and a more authentically “English” experience than other schools in the more storied English language learning locations. There are also some fantastic places to visit in the north of England, not far from York, like Harrogate, the surrounding Yorkshire Dales, and Chester, each more beautiful than the last. Between taking a course at this school and spending any time in this city, anyone going there for a vacation study will be in for a real treat!”
