The Globe English Centre Exeter offers a personalised educational experience situated in the picturesque and peaceful Southwest of England. The family-run school is located within beautifully modernised nineteenth century buildings, surrounded by trees and gardens and with breath-taking views of the Exe Valley. This a fantastic choice for students who want both the benefits of a city and the countryside during their studies.
Exeter is a cathedral city in the heart of Devon, England, on the River Exe, with a population of 127,300. Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed before the Roman invasion. Exeter became a religious centre during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor times. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and it is now center for modern business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall.

“I have long known Catherine Borgen, the founder of Globe, and more recently, her son Anton, through IALC school workshops. I visited the school a few years ago and was delighted to see the beauty of the city of Exeter and the surrounding Southwest region of England (my favorite area of the country). The school itself is in a handsome period building, with a large garden behind it, where students can socialize, an important part of taking a language course abroad. The school is fairly small, allowing students to have a very personalized experience, and it’s perfect for students who are a bit older than the average age of students in most language schools (about 23). It also caters extremely well to families who want to combine English study with a holiday, as it offers a range of adult courses, courses for children from a very young age, accommodation for everyone, and it can help organize child care for babies and toddlers too young for any kind of course. Exeter as a city is a great destination for an English language student of any age—it is beautiful, historic, compact and therefore walkable, and has a top-ranked university, meaning that there are services for students in town, and the opportunity for university-aged language students to make English friends of their own age. As a city without many language schools, students at the Globe will also find a good selection of high-quality host families. It’s definitely a good pick for students who want a combination of a good school, personal attention, and an interesting city with beautiful countryside and beaches nearby.”

After class, adults can choose to study, join the Adult Social Programme or accompany their children on the Junior Social Programme. Supervision is provided for 6 -10 year olds during weekdays from 8.30 – 17.30 so that adults can have some free time or take the course of their choice. The Globe can also recommend nursery schools (1-5 years old) or holiday camps for younger children.
HOMESTAY
One of the best ways to experience full immersion into British culture is to choose homestay accommodation. All homestays are carefully selected and visited regularly to ensure consistently high standards. In almost 40 years of operation, the school has amassed a large selection of host families in Exeter, and homestays are in fact the accommodation of choice for the majority of Globe English students. The school and Marshall Language Services recommend this form of accommodation the most for language learning. Family life is informal and the people are welcoming, friendly and talkative, so students will have plenty of opportunities to practise their English with native speakers. By booking homestay accommodation, students will also not have to worry about shopping for food and preparing meals every day. Mealtimes are often the occasions in which families converse most with the students.
Additional homestay provisions and information:
- Most families are located within 30 minutes distance of the Globe and all families are located on bus routes. A free bus pass will be given to students who are situated in a host family further than 2.8 km from the school.
- Students of the same mother tongue are not placed in the same household unless they request to stay with a friend.
- Full board (breakfast, packed lunch and evening meals) are included.
- Light laundry is done on a weekly basis.
- Private bathrooms may be requested.
- Host family Plus available for a higher standard of accommodation.
PRIVATE AND SHARED APARTMENTS
The Globe has access to eleven self-catering apartments, ten of which are located on the school campus and the other one just a 5-minute walk from the school. Some are shared apartments where each student has their own room and some are suitable for families. All apartments are fully equipped with kitchen and cooking facilities and heating, electricity, TV and WiFi are all included. Clean bed linen and towels are also provided.
NO ACCOMMODATION
It is possible to book only the course at the Globe English Centre. For students who would prefer to stay in a hotel, Exeter and the surrounding countryside offer a wide range of options that Globe English can recommend and book for students. There is a good selection within 5 minutes’ walk of the school.

Marshall Language Services has a policy available through Guard.Me that covers these elements, as well as an additional policy through CareMed that covers cancellation under a wider range of circumstances, including the need to repeat school exams.
