A sports lover’s paradise, Millfield is one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools, situated in the beautiful Somerset countryside and equipped with more sporting facilities than any other school in England. Millfield English Language Holiday Courses (MELHC) offer high-quality English language tuition in this setting, along with a vast assortment of optional academies focused on sports and other activities, and an on- and off campus social program.
Street, England is a large village in the county of Somerset, England. It has a population of 11,800 and dates possibly to the Roman period. Much of the history of the village is dominated by Glastonbury Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries; in fact, the name of the village comes from a 12th-century causeway from Glastonbury built to transport local Blue Lias stone from what is now Street to rebuild the Abbey.
The shoe company C&J Clark still has its headquarters in Street, but shoes are no longer manufactured there. The Shoe Museum in the village provides information about the history of Clarks and footwear manufacture in general. The Clark family’s former mansion and its estate at the edge of the town are now owned by the Millfield School, which uses it as one of the school’s boarding houses.
Street and the Millfield School are located 46 km from Bristol, a city with a thriving arts scene and one of England’s most popular tourist destinations.

“SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS! I had long heard of Millfield Enterprises as one of the two major providers of sports programs for children and teens in the UK (the other is Exsportise, whom Marshall Language Services also represents). Of Millfield Enterprises’ three locations, I first featured the Street campus on this website because of what the Millfield School itself there offers. There is no better place in the UK to participate in one or more sporting activities in England—during the academic year, the Millfield School is known for the sporting prowess of its students, and its campus houses a wide range of sports facilities. The school has produced many international and Olympic athletes among its students; Millfield has been represented at every Olympic Games since 1956. At the London 2012 Games, Millfield was the most represented UK school and the Russian swimming team and the Great Britain modern pentathlon squad also used the facilities for their training. At the Rio Games in 2016, eight Millfieldians took part and won a total of four medals in rowing, swimming and rugby sevens. If all this is not enough to convince you that this is the place for a child in England to combine sports with English, let the EL Gazette do it: In 2017, it named Millfield a “Centre of Excellence” based on the results of a recent British Council inspection. On this campus, children will appreciate the vast number of activities to choose from during their stay, whether they actually participate in sports or not, and of the sporting activities, there is widest selection that I know about on a British summer program. For small groups of siblings or friends who wish to travel together, the school will accept a fairly wide range of ages, and enough choices of afternoon activities for each person to do something different. Serious language learners will also appreciate the afternoon English options and the maximum limit of a single mother tongue that the program will accept at one time, allowing them to practice English and make friends with children of other nationalities (as well as native speaking British children, who also participate in the program.)”
