“I have been sending teenage students to Discovery Summer programs since the beginning of my career as educational agent; the company was recommended to me by some parents and children themselves who had been very happy there in previous years. New clients considering these programs can disregard the slick brochures and sales pitches of other schools. The EL Gazette and British Council have said it all about this one—these are among the top-ranked English language programs for children and teenagers in all of the United Kingdom. I’ll explain a bit how this ranking works: every four years, the British Council carries out an inspection of its 500 + member schools in the UK (nearly all reputable language schools in the UK are accredited by the British Council). During the inspection, in which two examiners inspect the school for days, they grade a school in 13 areas like teaching, care of students, accommodation, etc., and in 15 areas if the school also has programs for young learners. For each area, a school can receive a grade of “acceptable,” or it can exceed the expectations of the examiner. When the latter is the case, the school receives what’s called a “strength” in that area. As a result of these inspections, language schools typically receive about 3.5 strengths. On its last inspection, Discovery Summer received 13 out of a possible 15!
There are also many aspects of this program that I like about it as agent. To begin with, the English courses are necessarily intensive, and the workshops offered along with the classic language lessons are intelligent, innovative, and relevant to the world of teens and young adults today. Then, it has a fantastic nationality mix, and most of the students attend it as individuals or in small groups of friends or siblings. As with all of my junior programs, the numbers of single mother-tongue speakers are limited, the importance of which I cannot stress enough in the selection of an effective language course for children and teens. In fact, in representing this program over the years, it was often not possible to book it for my clients as the quota for Italian speakers had long been reached (also for this reason, it is important to book it early in the year). Additionally, the program is one of the few on the market that includes the presence of British children, obligating the students to speak English with them, and allowing them to make friends with them. From an organizational perspective, parents will also appreciate that this program goes from mid-week to mid-week, permitting them to book flights for the high season on weekdays, rather than on weekends, when they cost more and the airports are more crowded. Finally, with mid-week programs, the class “weeks” span a Saturday and Sunday, and the program “weekends” are on Mondays or Tuesdays, for example, when the venues for excursions in England are also much less crowded.”

Special private transfers can be arranged at any other time and from any other airport at an extra cost.
Marshall Language Services will need to furnish the participant’s flight information to Discovery Summer so that the airport transfers can be organized. Parents will received detailed instructions on what the student should do when their flight arrives. It is also possible for parents to accompany their children to the Radley campus personally. On departure, Radley Summer Discovery staff will check the student into their flight and see them through the departure gate. If they are traveling as unaccompanied minors, they will hand over the children to airline staff.
The courses
Discovery Summer Radley offers intensive programs designed to maximize every opportunity for improving the student’s English. Through collaboration, lively classes and a range of stimulating activities, they will develop accuracy, fluency and, most importantly, confidence. Multinational classes encourage natural communication in English. In the English and Multi-Activity courses, the teaching program is divided between English Skills, English Workshops, and end-of-week presentations.
English Skills
Topic-based classes, such as Great Britain, Media and Entertainment, and Science and Technology help develop core skills in using grammar, reading, writing, listening, and building confidence in spoken English. The English Student Hosts will work alongside students in most classes. Each week students will complete a learner review to help them and their teacher track their progress. At the end of the course, each student will take home a student folder that includes Discovery diary entries, samples of their work, an academic end-of-course report, a Discovery Summer Certificate, and a course photo.
English Workshops
The Discovery Summer workshops help students to learn and develop their English by researching, discussing, collaborating and creating. In these fun, task-based sessions, students will explore new topic areas and build confidence in using new vocabulary and in important life skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.
Workshop topics vary from week to week and are research-based, creative/artistic, performance-based, or practical and tech-based. Each week students choose a different workshop from the following:
- British Culture
- Game Design
- Film Making
- Discovery TV
- Debating
- Fashion
- Fun with IELTS
- Junior Chef
- Mask Making
- Photo Journalism
- Poetry Writing
- Shadow Puppets
At the end of each week, each class presents its achievements in front of the whole school, motivating them to practice developing their confidence and presentation skills.
Tech Workshops
Tech English Workshop options help students develop new skills while learning specialist vocabulary. They are the perfect interface between technology, the creative arts and language learning, and can involve manipulating images, designing websites, writing code, or developing a robot.
Accommodation at Discovery Summer Radley
At Discovery Summer Radley, students are accommodated in boarding houses with separate areas for girls and boys, each supervised by a friendly, caring House Parent/Welfare Officer. He or she will be there to welcome students and answer any questions. Discovery Summer Radley staff also live in the boarding houses and are available 24 hours a day.
The Discovery Summer experience is about making new friends and communicating in English. For this reason, the time that students may spend on their mobile phones and the internet is limited. They are also normally placed in a bedroom with students from other countries. If students prefer single rooms, Discovery Summer Radley offers a variety mix of nationalities in the corridors.

The following tool will help you to get a good idea of the cost of a language course and accommodation, if requested, at this school. It may not include all the courses and accommodation options available or take into account promotional offers or costs associated with student visas, insurance, study materials or exam fees. For these reasons, the availability of any course, accommodation option (especially in the high season) and the final price of a package will always have to be verified with Marshall Language Services prior to enrolment.
