The Lake District is a region and national park in Cumbria in northwest England. A popular vacation destination, it’s known for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fells (mountains) and historic literary associations. Market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on scenic Derwentwater are bases for exploring the area and home to traditional inns, galleries of local art and outdoor equipment shops. The Lake District was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
Sedbergh is a small market town in east Cumbria, beneath the Howgill Fells, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and close to the Lake District National Park.
Sedbergh is mentioned in the Doomsday book, and the name is a derivative from the Norse “Set Berg” meaning ‘flat-topped hill’. The town was granted a market charter by Henry III in 1251 and the Sedbergh School was founded there in 1525.
The town today offers quality shopping, great pubs and local food and drink, and comfortable places to stay for all tastes and budgets. There is much to see and do, both indoors and out, and wonderful views all around for both adrenaline enthusiasts and those who prefer something more relaxing. Sedburgh is also England’s Booktown.
Sedburgh is a two hour’s drive from Manchester, home to an international airport.
