Sponsored by Yale University, the Julian Krinsky Yale Summer Academy is an immersive, innovative leadership program for high school students aged 14 to 17 designed to develop the next generation’s leaders, top thinkers and change-makers. The Leadership Summer Academy takes place at the prestigious Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut offering students the opportunity to preview life at a world-class Ivy League institution through academic majors taught at Yale. This truly a one-of-a-kind program prepares teenagers for their next step in life at one of the world’s finest educational institutions.

Founded in 1701, it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Its history, academic achievements, wealth, and selectivity have made Yale one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

The city of New Haven has a bustling pedestrian life with its numerous shops, cafes and top-rated restaurants. There are world-class museums available to students, such as the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art. Some favorite restaurants are Yorkside Restaurant, Ashley’s Ice Cream, Shake Shack, and Louis’ Lunch, where the first American hamburger was made.

Safety
Safety of students is the number one priority at Julian Krinsky Yale University Summer Academy. Resident Advisors will live on campus with students providing full supervision. There is 24/7 campus security at Yale University and a registered nurse and doctor are always on call.
Airport Transfers
Airport transfers to and from JFK Airport to the campus of Yale University is via an independent shuttle company. One JKCP staff member will be available at JFK airport to help students check in and assist them in finding the shuttle service desk. All students arriving to JFK must reserve a seat on the shuttle prior arrival. The shuttle service is available only on a set date (see dates and fees).

JULIAN KRINSKY YALE UNIVERSITY SUMMER ACADEMY PROGRAM
ENRICHMENT STYLE COURSES
The Yale Summer Academy is an immersive, innovative leadership program for high school students allowing them to gain first experience of life at an Ivy League institution. The program allows students to explore these five academic majors of Yale University on a rotating schedule:
- Communications
The Communications course will enhance the student’s ability to successfully articulate his or her point of view, and persuade others through the written and spoken word. Various modes of persuasion will be utilized to gauge the persuasiveness of argumentation. The composition of organizational mission and vision statements, and the unique facets of each, will be covered as well. - Economics
The Economics course analyzes the role of economic incentives in determining the decision-making of global actors. A brief primer on economic principles will be provided, along with an examination of how those principles influence the success or failure of efforts toward sustainability. - Environmental Science
The Environmental Science course teaches students about the current state of the global environment and investigates the precise nature of the problem of sustainability through an environmental prism. - Politics
The Politics course provides students with an overview of the key people and organizations that make and enforce policy regarding global issues. Previous and contemporary political efforts toward sustainability, both those that could be judged as largely successful and those that fall short, will be examined. - Technology
The Technology course will teach students to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the increase of technology, primarily with regard to the role that technology relates to the human condition. Efforts to use technology to impact humanity and the environment will be discussed.
EXPLORE YALE
The Julian Krinsky Yale University Summer Academy classes are supplemented with daily “Explore Yale” breakout sessions that introduce students to Yale’s most celebrated and picturesque museums, libraries and landmarks.
LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
The Leadership Seminar explores different leadership theories, both in academic and ecologically-valid contexts. Students will be asked to evaluate their own approaches to leadership, and to think strategically about the intentional application of leadership theories as problem-solving tools.
CULMINATING PROJECT
The project-based component of the program introduces high-level leadership, advocacy and teamwork training. Working in groups, students will agree upon an issue and use the knowledge learned in the courses to develop a sustainability initiative and begin to inspire change. This can be the creation of an NGO or piece of legislation. At the end of the program, they will showcase the group’s work during the Program Symposium.

RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION ON THE YALE CAMPUS
Dorms
Students will live in renovated, air-conditioned student dormitories on the Yale University campus. The dormitories are centrally located within steps of the dining center and classrooms. Most of the rooms are spacious singles or doubles and complete with beds, desks, chairs and dressers. Bathrooms are shared.
Meals
Students will have all meals during the week at the campus dining center. On the weekends, breakfast on Saturday and brunch and dinner on Sunday are served on campus.
Laundry
Bed linens, towels and a laundry service are available at an extra cost.
Student Welfare
On each floor, students will have a team of residential advisors, who are responsible for assisting students on all aspects of the program.
Insurance
Insurance covering medical and travel assistance, personal liability and trip cancellation is not included in the price of the program. Marshall Language Services has a policy available through Guard.Me that covers these elements, as well as an additional policy through CareMed that covers cancellation under a wider range of circumstances, including the need to repeat school exams.
