Excel English has been running teenage programs since 2005, and now offers an exciting and unusual summer course designed for older teenagers and with a unique “university taster” theme. The program is based in its beautiful year round school for adults in London, and is the ideal course for students who want to improve their English, learn useful study skills, make international friends, experience UK universities, explore the city and parts of England, and have a great time.
Muswell Hill is a fashionable residential area with beautiful architecture, many sports and entertainment centers with quick access from the center of London. The Sunday Times newspaper recently named Muswell Hill one of the top 5 places to live in London and a survey for Time Out magazine found it is the friendliest part of the city. Muswell Hill is an area home to real Londoners, not tourists.
London is one of the world’s most fascinating and visited capital cities and has everything to offer, from historic buildings to art galleries, designer shops, and the latest exciting non-stop nightlife. It is a youthful city with 43 universities and over 300,000 students.

I got to know the owner of the school, Judy Loren, about 10 years ago, and since then have seen the school enter the IALC and Quality English associations that I know well. I visited the school in 2016, have sent students there since then, and can attest to how present and involved Judy is in the everyday management of the school and in her relationships with agents. I was also very pleased to see how highly this school has been ranked by the EL Gazette and British Council. I’ll explain a bit how this ranking works: every four years, the British Council carries out an inspection of its 500 + member schools in the UK (nearly all reputable language schools in the UK are accredited by the British Council). During the inspection, in which two examiners inspect the school for days, they grade a school in 13 areas like teaching, care of students, accommodation, etc., and in 15 areas if the school also has programs for young learners. For each area, a school can receive a grade of “acceptable,” or it can exceed the expectations of the examiner. When the latter is the case, the school receives what’s called a “strength” in that area. As a result of these inspections, language schools typically receive about 3.5 strengths. On its last inspection, Excel English received 12 out of a possible 15, placing it among the top 5 schools in London!
As for the area of the school, Muswell Hill is located in zone 3 of London, and is very well-connected to the center of the city. The area itself is beautiful, with all the conveniences of a good neighborhood, and is a place to see many original Londoners and their families. When a student books a school in the center of the city with host family accommodation (as I always recommend for learning the language), most likely he or she will be traveling 45 minutes to an hour to get to school. This school has more than half of its host families and one very good student residence within walking distance of the school. When a student does an intensive English course, much of the day will be spent in class or doing homework, so in turn for much of the week the student will be staying in the local area, and being close to the accommodation is important for that. However, for the weekends and some evenings, all of the attractions of London are still just half an hour away. In that sense, the school offers the best of both worlds—and at a reasonable price for the London market.
A few years ago, Excel English introduced a new, very high quality program for teenagers. This program sets itself apart from other teenage homestay programs in London, first of all for the excellent location, and then for the intensive English course, the university “tasters” not found in other homestay programs, and the activity calendar filled with visits to the city. It also offers students the choice of staying in a residence if they prefer, and all students will have a hot lunch in neighborhood cafés rather than the packed lunches that most teenagers don’t eat. The price of the program also offers an excellent value for the quality of the school, and for how much it contains.
Additional note for ice skating fans: Excel English is a ten-minute walk from the famous and historic Alexandra Palace, which contains a high-level ice skating rink, coaches and instructors. Teenagers who practice this sport can do a combined program of English plus ice skating training while they are there. I have organized this customized program for a few clients, and am happy to talk about how it can be done.”

Excel English Summer Teenager Program
- Hours of English lessons per week: 15
- Minimum English Level required: A2
- Lessons include project work and preparation for excursions
- Program participants will have opportunities to speak with undergraduates or recent graduates about their university experiences
Excel English’s unique program offers a mixture of all language skills and also university skills suitable for studying anywhere in the world. The 15 hours of tuition include public speaking, debating, presentations, how to take notes, essay planning, time management, summary writing, some academic English and the opportunity to speak to recent graduates about what studying at university is really like. Students improve their English, and also learn skills useful for their future lives. Lower level students will concentrate more on learning general English than university skills.
The university visits include looking round the campus, but also a hands on experience of what it would be like being a student there. The visits can include a special lecture where the students have to take notes, a visit to an architectural degree show with an architectural lecturer to explain how the students arrived at their designs, a session in an interior design studio with an explanation of how to create a look for a client, a hand- on session in a media suite learning how media students work with the equipment, plan broadcasts, etc. Students will be using the skills they’re being taught in the lessons and opening their eyes to the difference between being a high school student and a university student. It will also give them different ideas about which subjects to study.

HOST FAMILY
One of the best ways to learn more about the people of Britain is to choose homestay accommodation. All homestays are carefully selected and visited regularly to ensure consistently high standards. Homestays are in fact the accommodation of choice for the majority of students. The school and Marshall Language Services recommend this form of accommodation the most for language learning. Family life is informal and the people are welcoming, friendly and talkative, so students will have plenty of opportunities to practice their English with native speakers. By booking homestay accommodation, students will also not have to worry about shopping for food and preparing meals every day. Mealtimes are often the occasions in which families converse most with the students. Excel English offers 2 types of homestay, all with single or twin rooms upon request: a standard homestay with shared bath or a Superior homestay with a private bath (if available).
Additional homestay provisions and information:
- Carefully selected homestays with friendly hosts
- Usually in twin rooms
- Within walking distance or a short bus ride of the school
- Includes breakfast and dinner at the home
- Hot lunch in a local café
STUDENT RESIDENCES
- Modern residence with single rooms & shared bathrooms
- Includes a garden, sitting room, launderette & kitchens for making drinks
- 12 minutes by bus from the school
- Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner in local cafes
- Supervised by Excel English staff living on site

It may not include all the courses and accommodation options available or take into account promotional offers or costs associated with student visas, insurance, study materials or exam fees.
