Hauptstrasse and the Altstadt (Old Town)
Heidelberg’s Hauptstrasse is the place to start exploring this beautiful city, with unspoiled medieval architecture, splendid old churches, numerous boutique shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants.
Heidelberg Castle
Heidelberg Castle can be reached by the Bergbahn, a mountain railway running from the Kornmarkt, or via the old town. Built of red Neckar sandstone on the terraced hillside above Heidelberg, this 16th-century castle is one of the best examples of German Renaissance architecture. After its destruction by the French, it has remained the largest and most picturesque such ruin in Germany. The castle is home to many excellent festivals, most held in its evocative courtyard, as well as theatrical performances, concerts, and firework displays.
Heidelberg Cathedral
This sight is truly not to be missed – offering panoramic views from its position 300 meters above the city, the brave can hike up, or take the funicular railway for a lazy ride.
Church of the Holy Spirit
In the heart of the market square, this is the city’s most famous church, and an interesting place to duck into when you’re done shopping. Free to enter, donations welcome.
Heiligenberg
Get lungfuls of clean air on this Holy Mountain – an ideal day’s excursion for ramblers and nature lovers. The Philosopher’s Walk is a popular route. Check weather predictions.
Kurpfälzisches Museum
This is the place to learn more about Heidelberg through centuries of art and culture. The museum is closed on Mondays, and open 10:00AM to 6:00PM every other day.
Botanischer Garten der Universität Heidelberg
A calming oasis in the middle of the famed university complex, the botanical gardens are dedicated to preserving wildlife and educating future generations. Small but pretty.
Get away from the crowd
For a relaxing experience locals enjoy, try a spa/schwimmbad in Heidelberg. Pools, saunas and steamrooms will soak your worries away, although foreigners should check websites to find out exactly how ‘German’ the experience will be. Some won’t allow swimwear.
Eat like a king
For a quick taste of Germany try a currywurst – the nation’s best fast food – especially after a few good beers. Ask for “ohne darm” (without skin) for an authentic experience, and soak up your sauce “mit pommes” (with fries).

Heidelberg does not have its own airport, but because of its location, visitors can easily access the city by train, shuttle, rental car, or taxi, from many airports nearby. The closest ones are Frankfurt Airports, Stuttgart Airport and Strasbourg Airport.
By Train
The main train station (Hauptbahnhof) in Heidelberg is centrally located, and it has service to both regional towns and major cities, making it easy to get to Heidelberg from anywhere in the country.
By Shuttle
Lufthansa Airlines’ shuttle service from Frankfurt to Heidelberg is open everyone. TLS, Transfer & Limousine Service, also offers shuttle service to and from the Frankfurt Airport.
