The town of Hancock, New York, is located on the border of New York state and Pennsylvania. The town is known as the “The Gateway to the Delaware River.” The river, along with the many streams, lakes and ponds that surround Hancock, are teeming with brook and brown trout, perch, bass, bullhead and eel providing what many call “the best fishing in the United States.” The river also provides summer passage for canoers and rafters traveling to Equinunk, Skinner’s Falls, Fishes Eddy and points as far south as Port Jervis and New Jersey.
The Town of Hancock is comprised of many villages and hamlets, largest of which is the Village of Hancock. Route 97, which begins its journey at Hancock, has been designated “the most scenic highway in the East.” Hancock is also known as “The Gateway to The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.”
In Spring, golfers from all parts of the world play on the area’s two public golf courses, one of which was designed by legendary golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones. Both courses offer panoramic views and challenging holes. Winter brings record snowfalls, along with eager skiers that enjoy the several ski resorts located within 15-45 minutes of Hancock. Snowmobilers have reclaimed the old railroad beds in the area, creating literally hundreds of miles of trails.
Hancock is located only 2 1/2 hours from New York City, New Jersey and 3 hours from Philadelphia, making it a perfect summer or winter vacation retreat. Travelers and tourists alike take advantage of the dozens of restaurants, motels and B & B’s that dot the village and surrounding local area.

“Over the past few years, I have been receiving requests from families who are interested in sending their children to a classic summer camp, especially in the United States, rather than to an academic program, for their summer holidays. The reason for this is that over the course of many summer language programs, as well courses that their children may have done at home and at schools in their own country, they are ready to leave their textbooks and study of grammar behind and really use their English in a program along with children from the country where the camp is held. That way, they will be able to practice the language with them, learn many new activities that may not be available at home, and continue to communicate with their friends after camp is over in the many ways it is now technologically possible. French Woods is a good solution for that request because while it does have some international campers (who help to enrich the experience for all of them), the vast majority of them are American. This particular camp distinguishes itself for the fact that it is only for older children–the minimum age is 12 and most of the campers are teenagers. It also has a vast assortment of activities of particular interest to this age group, including the unusual circus arts, and for participants who would still like some English lessons, they are available at no extra cost, which is not always the case at other camps. French Woods is also appealing for the fact that it is located not far from New York city—international campers will be arrive to it very easily through the hundreds of direct flights available to the area, and the camp program itself also offers a trip to New York City, or the historical Philadelphia as an add-on to the camp experience. Italian families will also appreciate the fact that the number of campers from their country is currently zero, allowing for a complete full-immersion experience in English for their children”
