Boarding School Summer Camps in Lausanne
Overview
Lausanne is a city on Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking region of Vaud, Switzerland. It’s home to the International Olympic Committee headquarters, as well as the Olympic Museum and lakeshore Olympic Park. Away from the lake, the hilly old city has medieval, shop-lined streets and a 12th-century Gothic cathedral with an ornate facade. The 19th-century Palais de Rumine houses fine art and science museums.
Lausanne and the surrounding area is extremely picturesque; it is hardly surprising that the International Olympic Committee has been based here since 1914. The city is built on three hills, surrounded by vineyard-covered slopes, with Lake Geneva at its feet. Rising impressively from the opposing French lake shore are the Savoy Alps. Small alleyways with cafes and boutiques form the beautiful. pedestrian medieval city centre.
Lausanne’s old town is dominated by the cathedral, regarded as Switzerland’s most impressive example of early Gothic architecture. Shopping streets surround the cathedral, and can also be found in the pretty waterfront area of Ouchy. In Lausanne, Switzerland’s only “metro” connects the various parts of the town and eases travel.
Visitors to Lausanne will also enjoy the parks containing many Mediterranean plant species, and grand palace hotels like the Beau-Rivage Palace in Ouchy and the Hotel de l’Angleterre, where Lord Byron once stayed. Food enthusiasts will be able to savor many regional specialties such as cabbage-filled sausage with leek gratin known as “Papet Vaudois.” Lausanne’s Hôtel de Ville was once home to master chef Fredy Girardet, voted Cuisinier du siècle (“Chef of the Century”) by his colleagues, and his legacy lives on in his successors there.
For lovers of culture, Beaulieu Castle, the Fondation de l’Hermitage, the Musée de l’Elysée , and many others museums merit a visit. Lausanne’s offerings of theater productions and musical performances is also noteworthy. The world-famous Béjart Ballet is also based in Lausanne.
As the “Olympic Capital,” Lausanne is home to the Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of information about the Olympic games. Sports in general are also important to the city, which hosts the Lausanne Marathon and Athletissima, the international meeting for track and field athletics.

Things to Do and See During a Vacation Study
THINGS TO DO IN LAUSANNE
Explore the Old Town
On Saturdays year-round almost all of the huge car-free area becomes a vast farmers market. Thanks to the hills making it hard to pave over, Lausanne’s old town is larger than most found in Swiss cities, with the notable exception of Zurich. After the shops close there are dozens of quaint, cozy, hip, or just warm restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, especially considering that at Place Central the old town joins with the Flon nightclub/gallery district.
Explore the Sauvabelin Forest
Don’t miss the freely accessible Sauvabelin tower, from which you have a 360° view on the lake, the Alps and the Jura. There is also a small free zoo with domestic Swiss animals. The park of the Fondation de l’Hermitage is also located here on the slope in the direction of the city center.
Feast on authentic Swiss cooking
Learn Swiss cooking from the locals themselves, eat great food, enjoy the company of new friends and see a different side of the city. BonAppetour is a great site to discover unique dining experiences in Lausanne.
Enjoy the lakefront of Ouchy
Climb up the Cathedral Tower to see the view from the top. From 10PM until 2AM, a watch man shouts the hours, perpetuating a tradition that dates back to 1405. On the lake itself, rent a boat or paddleboat.
Swim
You can swim in the lake west from Ouchy in Vidy and Bourget parks and further west. An organized free beach with a necessary infrastructure is located in the eastern suburb Lutry. There are also a number of open-air and indoor pools.
